Hilarious - D.J.Taylor in top form. Please have a look at the section titled PLANET AMIS and at Anthony Powell's Journal (from Heaven). Taylor's one the shrewdest literary critics around, so WHAT YOU DIDN'T MISS just goes to show once again that parody and pastiche are possibly the subtlest (and certainly the funniest) form of critique.

Could the originals possibly be this good? 'The children listened thoughtfully with pale, stricken faces'; 'brittle-star and urchin-ball'; 'Elfrida's face shone arrestingly through the murk' ('AS Byatt'). They certainly wouldn't be as funny. Ken Pyne's vignettes add to the gaiety

A really funny selection - well done, DJ (whose other books can also be highly recommended).
