5.0 out of 5 stars Student cookbook
This is a fantastic book for anyone who is just staring out on the self sufficient route, it's packed with lovely recipes and even comes with very easy to follow pictures. If you think you can't even boil an egg properly then this book is a must, it will show you in easy steps how to russle up a "potato gartin" with confidence, and will have you trying "real steak and...

This is a good basic cookbook for students who are complete beginners or are not that confident about cooking; those with even limited cooking experience will probably find it too basic and may find the explanations of preparing the food a bit patronising.

I do not like the layout, which I find it too fussy and like a comic strip! I know it is aimed at students but the presentation would appeal more to infant school pupils, rather than university students.

However, there are some good illustrations and the cover looks like it would be easy to keep clean, just wipe over, which is important for a book in the kitchen.

OK, could be a lot better.

The Illustrated Student Cookbook
To be honest I wasn't very impressed with this book at all, it seemed the layout of the book and the recipes were aimed at children not students.
Also the meals were "extremely basic" to put it mildly, e.g. grated carrots, baked potatoes, homemade burger etc, I could go on but I think you get the point!
The only good points were it was in hardback and the photographs of the meals were reasonable. I wouldn't waste your time or money on this book; there are far better books out there on the subject.

This is a nicely laid out cookbook with illustrations and easy to follow recipes. However, in my opinion the recipes are just too simple and so for that reason I don't think I'll be taking the book with me to university. There are much better student cookbooks out there! I agree with other reviewers that this book would be better suited for young children rather than students.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but Dull, 27 Nov 2012
This review is from: The Illustrated Student Cookbook (Hardcover)
This cookbook is one of the most visually appealing of its kind, and really makes you want to cook. As a student cooking for the very first time, even the most simple recipes (jacket potatoes!) are helpful, just to get you started. The presentation of the book is fantastic, making it ridiculously simple to make any of the meals in the book. There's a huge downside to the book, though: very little of it do I find myself wanting to cook. There are a few recipes that are great, like carbonara and burgers, but I don't think I'll ever find a student who truly wants to be able to cook tabouleh. The idea for this cookbook is absolutely fantastic, and if it had been applied to some great student recipes, I don't think there would be a much better cookbook out there.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but not great, 6 Sep 2011

A very basic book-great for complete kitchen novices. Much more suitable for younger teens than those heading away to university.
The graphics are very "school" like and remind me of coursework or a school project. The recipes are very basic and not for showing off in the kitchen.

4.0 out of 5 stars empower your student in the kitchen, 25 Aug 2011

A great book to engage the student with some healthy and straight forward meal ideas. We sometimes expect too much of their survival skills when we pack them off to uni, but this book is well illustrated, has a great 'feel' and will tempt them into the kitchen for more than beans on toast. Let them try it out at home on your first!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Illustrated Student Cookbook, 17 Aug 2011

The Illustrated Student Cookbook is a good basic book with a reasonably varied choice of recipes, from pasta and salad dishes to meat or fish, even a selection of desserts (though veggies beware, there are a few suitable recipes, but the veggie section only covers soup). The illustrations are generally clear (with a few exceptions, some are occasionally lacking cooking time for certain steps) and each is accompanied by a full-page colour picture of the dish. For each, there is a small box listing difficulty, serving and preparation time, then the ingredients and equipment required, followed by the steps for cooking. These recipes are easy to work through and the dishes are tasty, but this book should be seen as a starting point for those with only basic culinary skills; it is good to pick up for inspiration when stuck or in need of a quick meal, and provides a good starting point for students away from home for the first time. However, those who really wish to flex their cooking muscles will probably want to look elsewhere.

Hardbacked book easy to clean, easy to follow step by step instructions with 34 recipes.
This book is ideal for any parent to give to there YOUNG children so that they can get a taste of cooking meals. That is why I cannot understand why it is called The illustrated STUDENT cookbook.
If I was a student I would be quite upset about this book, they do not need to be shown with pictures how to peel, grate or shake pepper into a bowl.
Use it for the younger generation and you wont be dissapointed.

This A4 sized cookbook is well laid out with all the instructions STEP BY STEP for any beginner who has never cooked before. The pictures of the finished dish is really good too, but I feel the recipes are just not to most Student tastes at all.

We tried a few, especially the crumpet recipe we used bacon & cheese and i cooked them in the toaster first. And these went down well with everyone.

I asked students what they thought of the recipes & the book and they all said the same... Great Price, Great Concept but not keen on the recipes. They said that out of 34 they would do less than 10 of them. And one comment on the few vegetarian dishes as not bad at all.

My teenage daughter made a few of the recipes and we left her too it, she did rather well to say she doesn't cook at all and she was proud of Potato Gratin that she made and I must admit it tasted really good for her first try at making dinner for us all.

Good price and great concept for this versatile Student Cook Book.
