5.0 out of 5 stars Good balance of inspiration and information.
I've given Lonely Planet quite a hard time lately - their magazine is fab, but the guidebooks have been pretty lacklustre for the last couple of years. I think this is because they've struggled to get the balance between info and a more pictorial type of reference book right. The proper book is a good product, but they made no attempt to adapt it for use on an electronic device

I've given Lonely Planet quite a hard time lately - their magazine is fab, but the guidebooks have been pretty lacklustre for the last couple of years. I think this is because they've struggled to get the balance between info and a more pictorial type of reference book right. Here, though, they've really come good, because this latest version of the guide (2013) is very impressive.

The layout is great, with the focus on exploring the city by region - thus you get seven 'chapters' devoted to La Rambla/Barri Gotic, Montjuic, La Ribera, Park Guell, L'Eixample, El Raval, and the waterfront. Each area has mouthwatering pics of architecture and attractions, plus walking routes and restaurant and shopping guides specifically for that precinct, which I think works very well.

At the front of the book, there's a list of Barcelona's Top 25 experiences, but they haven't gone overboard with themed lists like some previous guides - just this one set of 'must-sees'. At the back, you get a survival guide (climate, medical services, public holidays etc), and a list of places to stay, though the latter is quite succint - the authors have obviously realised most people will have researched and booked accomodation via the internet these days, and thus more of the book is devoted to what you'll do when you're out actually out there, as it should be. Fold up map of the city centre to be found on inside back cover.

There are also day trips out of the city (Girona, Monsterrat, Sitges) and some brief info on history of the region included.

In summary, it's probably not as in-depth as some of the really 'wordy' unillustrated guides like Frommers or Rough Guide, but I really do think they've struck a great balance here.
