4.0 out of 5 stars Central Asia - planning a month's trip
Being at the very early stages of planning a month's trak across Central Asia, Lonely Planet's Central Asia guide has proved to be invaluable in deciding upon the general route to be taken and the rough itinerary. It is full of useful information, facts and suggestions. Well worth the investment for other adventurers and travellers, although it's still useful to use in...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly light on content
Having travelled widely and independently, often with the LP or Rough guide, I picked this one to plan a 3 week trip around Kazakhstan. I have now spent an evening in the early stages of planning and I'm not convinced the author has even been to Kazakhstan recently. Are they really saying that their most recommended accommodation option in Almaty is £60 per person per...

Great guide to central Asia, including all the countries of the region. Highly recommended if you're going there! Could do with more pictures though...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly light on content, 24 Feb 2014
This review is from: Lonely Planet Central Asia (Travel Guide) (Paperback)
Having travelled widely and independently, often with the LP or Rough guide, I picked this one to plan a 3 week trip around Kazakhstan. I have now spent an evening in the early stages of planning and I'm not convinced the author has even been to Kazakhstan recently. Are they really saying that their most recommended accommodation option in Almaty is £60 per person per night? The emphasis seems to be on shopping and clubbing. What happened to the LP being for intrepid travellers on a low budget hoping to get a glimpse of another culture? I have had several recommendations from fellow travellers to visit Kazakhstan but from this book I would wonder what all the fuss is about. Am now ordering the Bradt guide in the hope that it is more comprehensive, and at least has some inspiring photos.

I think LP has missed a trick - Kazakhstan is a huge country and should have a guide of its own, not a few pages sandwiched between the other 'stans'.

Luckily this book was a free gift from another holiday booking. I would have been even more disappointed if I'd paid for it.
Come on LP, get back to your roots and give us a book of quality rather than one for the partying masses.
