5.0 out of 5 stars great book, 15 Jun 2009
This review is from: Walking in Britain (Lonely Planet Walking Guides) (Paperback)
although this book includes references to allow you to do further investigation, it really does give enough info that it can be used as a stand-alone guide for most of the walks it describes.

highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for planning, 4 Nov 2010
This review is from: Walking in Britain (Lonely Planet Walking Guides) (Paperback)
I bought this book two years ago and have since undertaken five day walks and five long distance walks from it. It is really inspirational and makes you want to go out in the countryside and explore. I feel there is a good selection of walks covering the whole of Britain. I see some people have complained that it doesn't contain enough walks from their neck of the woods; but if that were the case it would be a weighty tome indeed. As it says in the introduction, day walks have been chosen as the best examples in each region, and that walks are either long or short. The idea of the book it seems is to give a general overview of Britain allowing the walker to explore all of its various landscapes.

The best thing I like about the book is that it helps to plan one of the walks: telling you the distances expected, the difficulty, how to get from and to the walks, maps that may be needed and sleeping and eating possibilities. For the Hadrian's Wall walk all I needed was this book and a map (and I possibly could have done it even without the map:the way marking along the route was excellent). But, for something like the Coast to Coast walk with hardly any way markings I needed to get a more descriptive guide. Even so, the book was a great help in the planning stages and gave me concise details of how exhilarating the walk was expected to be during each day and what to look out for during each day's walk from stone circles to tea shops.
