I have bought a good few of these Lonely Planet phrasebooks for various different languages and find that they cover a very wide variety of situations where you are likely to need help. The phrases are also very relevant and very comprehensive. They are also very entertaining as they go a bit overboard for some scenarios. The dating section comes to mind with chatup lines included and even as far as translations for the likes of 'Not tonight I have a headache'!

This is much better than a standard phrase book: it has a useful chapter on the structure of the language and useful guidance for tourists. The most essential phrases are inside the front and back covers - which is very useful. In previous editions, it was difficult to distinguish between some Burmese characters - this edition is better.

I already own the Vietnamese and Thai versions of these great little books, they are incredibly useful and full of great phrases as well as very relevant social information which is useful for travelers.

Ok so it didn't have every word I needed when travelling through Burma for 3 weeks but it was useful. It's very detailed and most people wouldn't try and learn a language to that extent before a holiday but it was good to have. Would have been better if the pronounciation and stress of the spoken words was made clearer phonetically; this would make it easier to know how to pronunce the words.

Lots of additional information about the country and customs so read it from cover to cover. Could not get my head around pronounciations (not following the phonetic system that I had learned at University) and did not have time to pick it up while I was in Myanmar, but am sure, now, to have another look.

And the people are so happy when you try out a few words. But it's not an easy language to learn!
