5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Comprehensive, very well and clearly written and explained. Straight forward text and lots of diagrams! It covers more than I expected. Not just a technical book, but also gives you great advice on approach to this kind of work, and how to start from absolute scratch (having the right attitude towards the industry and music).

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited and in places technically incorrect
Firstly, the editing could have been much better. In several places, sections have obviously been moved around and not updated afterwards - so some earlier sections are written as if you've already read later ones. Some of the diagrams' captions also refer to colours in the diagrams - despite the fact that the book is printed in black & white!

Firstly, the editing could have been much better. In several places, sections have obviously been moved around and not updated afterwards - so some earlier sections are written as if you've already read later ones. Some of the diagrams' captions also refer to colours in the diagrams - despite the fact that the book is printed in black & white!

Worse is the theoretical information, which is patchy - and in places actually incorrect... For eample, he defines RMS as "the square root of the arithmetic mean of the square's set of values". Somebody needs a technical editor.

And don't get me started on the chapter about cables, which is just one big exercise in hi-fi voodoo, and an advert for a certain cable manufacturer. Blind tests aren't mentioned anywhere, so the 'differences' he describes are more than likely just the result of the aural equivalent of the placebo effect. And the section on digital audio connections is plainly ridiculous.

That said, there are some great practical tips for working in the industry, and for things like miking and processing different instruments. A lot of these are more applicable to recording than live sound, but useful nonetheless.

great for beginners, covers all aspects required for theoretical learning. I lost the dvd though and some online videos would be helpful.
