5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent volume in this series, 19 Jun 2013

This review is from: Hellboy Library Edition Volume 6 (Hellboy (Dark Horse Library)) (Hardcover)
The stories here range from 2009 to 2013, and were originally collected in paperback as `The Storm and the Fury' and `The Bride of Hell'. There is also the usual large gallery of annotated sketches and variant covers. I didn't start reading Hellboy until the Hellboy Library series of giant-sized hardbacks presented themselves - and Forbidden Planet's special advance order prices meant that they were much cheaper than buying the paperback editions! These hardbacks, if you have the space for them, reprint the artwork at almost twice the normal size, and even though I tend to be more interested in the story than the art, I was very impressed by the quality of the artwork produced for this series, as well as for the sibling series of B.P.R.D `Plague of Frogs' hardcovers. The contents of this volume are -

P005: The Storm and the Fury
P171: The Bride of Hell & other stories
P175: Hellboy in Mexico
P205: Double Feature of Evil
P235: The Sleeping and the Dead
P285: The Bride of Hell
P311: The Whittier Legacy
P319: Buster Oakley Gets His Wish
P346: Story Notes
P350: Afterword
P353: Sketchbook
P424: Adverts

The `Storm and the Fury' has 159 pages of artwork, including chapter breaks; `The Bride of Hell' has 168 pages of artwork, including chapter breaks, and the story notes and sketchbooks have another 77 pages, for a total page-count of 424 pages, including title pages, Introductions etc. The `Storm and the Fury' is a direct sequel to the previous story, reprinted in Hellboy Library Edition #5, and marks the end of the first phase of Hellboy's life on Earth, in a rather significant way. It was originally published as `Hellboy: The Storm #1-3 and `Hellboy: The Fury ##1-3. This story, according to the Introduction, is "the climax of Hellboy's adventures. Every villain, every prophecy, every foreshadowing intertwines and explodes. Hecate, the Osiris Club, Nimue, Gruagach, a hundred guns on the wall: they all go off here. You might be wondering if, in fact, the ending is as dramatic as promised. Screw the spoiler alert, chums - I'm ruining it for you..."; but I am not. I would recommend (re)reading the previous story/volume before reading this story, though, just to get all the characters back in focus, especially as it could really be considered as one continuous story.

The Bride of Hell' is a collection of shorter works, set over the years of Hellboy's wanderings after leaving the BPRD, as shown in the contents listing above. It includes Mexican Wrestlers, references to Lobster Johnson, horror movie double bills, monsters, ghosts and just deserts. And a lot of entertainment.

Can't fault this series at all , Hellboy Library Edition vol 6 is a wonderful piece of work, as you'd expect from this creative team, and, as always, beautifully packaged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just gets better!, 1 Jun 2014

I have been reading the library editions of Hellboy since the third book was released. Having been purchased the original trilogy, I have been collecting them ever since and they just get better all the time. The artwork is fantastic and beautifully bound. For someone who had never read comics up until I got these books, I can honestly say it is well worth the money. For any Hellboy fan, even if you are just a fan of the films and, like me, had never read the comics, take the plunge! It's well worth it!
