5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling Young Adult Science Fiction Novel from E. C. Myers, 24 Aug. 2012

This review is from: Fair Coin (Hardcover)
"Fair Coin" puts an astounding new spin on the phrase "Be Careful What You Wish For" in an imaginative, fast-paced Young Adult science fiction novel from debut novelist E. C. Myers. This is truly a most creative, brilliant blend of science fiction, thriller and crime fiction, and one worthy of note to older readers as well as its intended Young Adult audience. Myers interjects theoretical physics and "magic", and mixes them well with realistic depictions of adolescent friendships and the love between sons and mothers, daughters and fathers, in a coming-of-age tale far more insightful and compelling than Karen Thompson Walker's highly touted "Age of Miracles", with protagonists that are far more human in their strengths and weaknesses than those in Walker's recently published novel. Readers will be intrigued with how Myers has inserted successfully, multiverses as the underlying rationale for the riveting story as it unfolds, with the "fair coin" working as the "key" to their "doorways". Myers is a masterful storyteller and fine prose stylist displaying much confidence in juggling his complex plot and having lots of fun in taking readers along with him for the ride. Myers is certainly a debut author worthy of note, a fresh, distinctive voice in science fiction who has wrought one of the more compelling literary debuts published this year; I am eagerly looking forward to reading his future novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent YA Sci-Fi, 15 Nov. 2013

After Ephraim's mother believes she has identified his body after an accident she attempts suicide and Ephraim finds her slumped at the kitchen table when he gets home from school.

Among the unidentified boys belongings which inadvertently come to Ephraim he finds a strange coin that can grant wishes...except it doesn't grant them in quite the way Ephraim expects. Things go horribly wrong each time he makes a wish, creating strange and frightening experiences and shifts, and affecting and changing his life and also the lives of the people in his world.

Quite an intriguing sci-fi plot with parallel universes and dopplegangers. An interesting take showing how the same person can develop into different personalities given altered circumstances and it's a good point that Ephraim takes responsibility for the actions he takes and does his best to rectify things.

A really good story with realistic teenage characterisation. I like the plot twists and the ending.

One of MacLeod Andrews' strengths is narrating Young Adult novels which he does with sincerity and credibility, always seeming invested in the story and connected to the characters.
