5.0 out of 5 stars Superb shonen rom-com with a twist, 27 Jun 2013
This review is from: Sankarea Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Chihiro is the main character, who is obsessed with zombies to the point that he is only romantically interested in the living dead. Whilst the titular character, Rea, is trapped & miserable in an abusive family high up the social ladder. Rea yearns for freedom & when she discovers Chihiro is trying to reanimate his cat, she thinks he may be able to help him.

The first volume was very entertaining & does a good job of establishing the characters and their motives. It's also quite refreshing to see a shonen rom-com which doesn't involve the protagonist being fought over by an army of girls. Assuming Rea remains the only zombie female in the series, it will be very interesting to see their relationship develop. Rea will have to deal with the problems that come from a zombie but also get to enjoy freedom from social shackles for the first time, so there's plenty of material to mine for comedy. As long as the series keeps subverting tropes & avoids typical cliches, I think there is huge potential for the series & eagerly await the next volume.

This was an impulse buy (I got excited by Kodansha manga being available on Kindle Fire), so I came into it without really knowing what to expect.

I envisioned a cutesy fanservice harem kinda story (think Is This A Zombie?) - there were a few fanservice moments and definitely some funny/quirky part...but this was mostly more serious than I expected, touching on death, abusive parents, a bit more death and some educational stuff about poisonous plants (always handy).

Avoiding spoilers, it's about a boy who's really into zombie movies. He tries making a potion to revive the dead, but a beautiful girl from the classy school across the river gets involved with his scheme. Dun dun DUN.

Nice art, a decent story and likable characters - I have volume 2 pre-ordered already!

It looks awesome on Kindle Fire, by the way!
