One of my very favourite things, something to go back to again and again. I mistakenly believed, with a shelf of anthologies of Poe, Blackwood, MR James and so forth, that I was an expert of some kind on the ghost story. This collection broadened the pallette considerably; there are so many hits here, and so few misses; some of the classics are present, but the really finest stories come out of left field, from authors not known in the genre. Consequences oozes class, sophistication, depth and power, for example. Bram Stoker's Growing Gold is superbly dark; Bierce's famous and much anthologised creature snaffles its way onto the disc, alongside Blackwood's magnificent, somehow primal haunted house visit and Mark Twain's fascinating little excursion into lucid dreaming. Then there are entries from relative unknowns some of which simply knock the listener's socks off. I would ask AudioGo to do another, a sequel as it were, but only if they can get the same genius compiler to hunt out some more hidden classics. They have genuinely excelled themselves with this set of discs.
