An excellent read of a former minister of religion who left the church after 17 years when he realized that his faith was no longer there and that the bible was no longer in his eyes the inerrant word of god.
It is highly readable, and follows in a very moving way his path through faith then through loss of faith, to reason.
He then looks back over the arguments for the existence of Jesus, of Christianity and even the provenance of the bible - and finds them all lacking. Definitively he picks through the bones and finds them all wanting.
You can hear how it is almost with sadness in the beginning, and then with pure reason afterwards, than he examines each argument, and finds in favour of reason.
Ultimately he decides that there is no evidence to say that Jesus ever existed, instead that he was just another manifestation of the resurrection gods like Horus etc over thousands of years. The bible merely a collection of stories over thousands of years, and certainly not written by or at the behest of a non-existent god.
Rather than being sad or depressed at this apocryphal moment, he actually seems relieved and happy - no longer weighed down by the oppression and shadow that religion and a jealous god brings with it.
Highly recommended - especially if you are into religion of any kind - it could set you free!

Brian's book is a recount of his personal experience of leaving religion, a religion that had basically been his whole life for some 17 years. He shows that when the bible is objectively read, with an open mind, it will prove itself to be illogical, ill-conceived and actually quite nasty. He goes on to show that the God portrayed in the bible is not a very nice character, in many ways, and is really just a creation of mankind. His debunking of biblical texts and exposing them for their true meaning is excellent.
This is a great book for anyone who has been indoctrinated into, or joined a similar church environment and is now having doubts about there convictions.

An excellent 'first port of call' for anyone who has ever doubted religion. Brian relates his story from 'Faith to Reason' and as a successful ex-minister his insights are very revealing. Packed full of reasoned arguments and selected passages from the bible to back them up, this is an engaging read for anyone wanting to take those first few steps into atheism.

As I have already said this is empowering and at some point in our lives we have to face the truth or continue to live life and believe in the supernatural!!!

Firstly, don't expect this to be a scholarly book. While it's very well researched, it's written in a personal and rather colloquial style. Its focus is on Christianity, as Baker was a fundamentalist priest, and a very successful one. It doesn't dig deeply into the origins of the Christian church, but blows apart the core beliefs as they are held today. The critique of the Bible is very similar to Dawkins', and Baker uses many of the same examples. At the end is a personal account of how Baker came to abandon his faith, and that for me was the most interesting part. For those who have read Hitchens, Dawkins, Bart Ehrman etc, there is little that's new, but it's still well worth reading.

I tend to agree with most of Brian Bakers opinions re the Bible . He has lost all faith in a "next life" he is in for great surprise! I do not understand why he has lost all belief in a life after death ! If there is no afterlife what is the point of all of our life on this world. He will find that we are just at the beginning!
