4.0 out of 5 stars A Master At Work, 2 Oct 2009
This review is from: West Coast Blues (Hardcover)
I first read Tardi in the pages of RAW and was impressed with his drawing style and the weirdly dark atmosphere of the stories. Quite a while later i bought `The Bloody Streets of Paris' which i thought was fantastic and since then i have been trying to track down all his out-of-print translated works.

Thankfully Fantagraphics have launched a new translation project for Tardi's work in English. Big thanks must go to Kim Thomson (editor and translator of the project) and Adam Grano (Designer) for such a great job on the first book and hopefully many more to come.

This book `West Coast Blues' (Le Petit bleu de la cote ouest) is a very dark and violent noir thriller adapted from a book by Jean-Patrick Manchette who was a very popular French crime novelist in the 70's and 80's. Most of the characters in this story are wonderfully cool and unpleasant to each other in the highly entertaining noir fashion.

It doesn't get any more hard-boiled than this kind of tale and there is a large amount of violence, nudity and `bad language' in the book. The story twists and turns suddenly in ways you dont expect and Tardi's amazing clear line drawing style holds the whole thing together beautifully. His artwork really is one of the finest examples of Franco-Belgian comics (bande dessinée) you can find, his professional reputation in Europe is up there with masters like Moebius, Hermann, Manara and Pratt.

I am looking forward to the next books in this project - `You Are Here' and `It Was The War Of The Trenches' and hopefully many more. If all goes well we might also finally get to read the complete adventures of one of French comics' most famous heroines- Adèle Blanc-Sec.

For now though, buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comic Gold, 25 Oct 2009
This review is from: West Coast Blues (Hardcover)
This really is the motherlode as far as i am concerned. Sharp, dark, funny, and intelligent. Then you have Tardi's art.Wow.The characters, situations, action sequences,shading- everything screams dramatic gold dust. It appears tardi has a knack of eeking out the full graphical scope of any story, knowing just what angle, expression or hue is needed to convey/transport the story. These translations are well overdue, however some older ones are still available, check out roach killer.I for one, cannot wait until 'you are there' is released and pray that all his work will one day be released in english. If i sound like a gushing teenage fan it is only testament to tardi's talent.Well done fantagraphics!

George Gerfaut helps a man after a what looks like a traffic accident. Then he finds himself chased by to proffecional assasins. He has to fight them off and find out why they are after him. This is better than his series abot Adele Blanc Sec.
