The American Presidents review
on 31 May 2010
I bought this book via Amazon. It was delivered ahead of schedule, undamaged and in very good condition. As an English person I knew only a little about the USA Presidents. This book added to my knowledge, it provides birthplaces, dates, spouses, children, military histories, and official posts held - and quite a lot of background information. It is a useful work of reference but did not bring the Presidents "alive", perhaps because of lack of space and a wish not to offend. It added to my scant knowledge of George Washington; but I thought he crossed the Delaware and this book does not tell anything about it, and why he did so. Ulysses S Grant placed a foundation stone at Sunderland library (6 miles from my home) in 1882 - now I know why he was there (promoting his memoirs). There was little of Woodrow Wilson shamefully refusing to let the USA come to the aid of the allies in WW1, until it was in the USA interest to do so. This book is a handy starter for knowing about the foundation of an independent America and of its Presidents. The reader can then go back to Amazon to buy a book devoted to the President of their choice, which will, hopefully, go into much more detail.
