Lady Juliana of Bellemare is a princess protected by the blessed. Betrothed to an old friend of her father's, Juliana is resigned to living out her days close to her childhood home, longing for an adventure, never dreaming she'd get what she wished for. When her fiance is murdered and the children of the city stolen, Juliana sets out on a quest to a strange realm where appearances can be deceiving.
Merrick, dark elfin King of Valdis is trapped as the ruler of mischief, king of necessary evil, he stands on a alone. He desires Juliana like no man ever will and desires her unconditional love above all else.
this is the first of the series and its quit a good start, i loved the world Michelle m pillow created and the magical creatures were wonderful.
i how ever only gave this book 3 star because of the the lead character Juliana i found her rather simple and irritating. She didn't learn from mistake or really grow throughout the book .She didnt trust or even like Merrick yet she sleeps with him almost immediately. She came across as judgmental, rude and a little dense but thats find because shes a lady. I prefer my female leads to be smart, strong willed and a lot less whinny.
Merrick was complex and there are a lot of issues he had to resolve involving his 2 older brother. yes he didn't always do the right thing but who does and struggled to be honest about his feeling.
i have to say my favorite character was King Lucian yes hes is the quintessential evil king but dang was he hot just the right mix of evil, cruel and otherworldly sexy. his actions where calculated and wholly evil but thats what made him so interesting yet there were a few occasional sparks of humanity there i just hope he gets his own book
