5.0 out of 5 stars A truly glorious book!
It was such a pleasure to read this book again. It was a staple of my childhood, and many of the hilarious (and wildly politically incorrect) verses are stuck forever in my memory, as are the quirky illustrations. Hilaire Belloc is ridiculously xenophobic, but - provided you can excuse him on the grounds that he wrote it in a very different age - wonderfully funny...

1.0 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed
This version of the cautionary tales does not include any of the famous pictures. All the lines are run together so the verses look like prose without any paragraphs. In the orginal printed version all poems start on a new page. Here it is not obvious when a new poem starts. The whole book looks like an integral part of its introduction.

I was expecting joyful...

4.0 out of 5 stars Darkly delightful, 13 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In a satire of Struwelpeter and its ilk this tiny tomb of terrible tales deals disciplinary admonishment in delightfully dark and dreadful ways with outcomes as gleefully gory as they are ridiculous. In this Bookaboo generation of sacharine sweet stories this book, Gorey and like minded authors supply secretive sinisterly sly smiles and selfindulgent snickers to one old enough to know better. And I do love a little alliteration.

3.0 out of 5 stars Belloc's Cautionary Verses, 23 Oct. 2011

This review is from: Cautionary Tales for Children (Paperback)
The verses are of course superb. It is a shame that they do not include
the splendid illustrations by "B.T.B." which accompanied the edition I was brought up on. If they had, this would get five stars!

1.0 out of 5 stars Exercise Caution Here, 26 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Belloc wrote and published more than one hundred poems, most of them witty and enjoyable, what a shame that so few are included here. The book is beautifully bound and the cartoons are well illustrated but at barely sixty pages, it is far too small to justify the price. There is little in the way of an introduction either so the reader is not given any insight into the author or his work. Avoid.
