4.0 out of 5 stars Joe delivers again - a great book but with health warning, 23 Oct 2010
This review is from: Life Guide to Digital Photography: Everything You Need to Shoot Like the Pros (Paperback)
I've had this book on order ever since it was mentioned on Joe's blog so no surprise I'm a big fan. As ever with his books (and seminars) he delivers great inspirational photographic instruction with a storytelling style. The stories of how, what, where and when to take great images are always are explained in a simplified but understandable way. My health warning for all new Joe McNally readers is regarding equipment - you won't be far into this excellent book before recommendations for big glass, light modifiers, off camera flash SB 900's etc start to be discussed and I feel for the majority of photographers this kit (as used by the pros) is probably out of the reach of most amateurs. Please don't let this health warning stop you buying this or any of Joe's books. Have a look at his blog and if you can catch him at one of his seminars when he is next in the UK. A great all round guy but also a fantastic image maker.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Expectations, 25 Nov 2010

This review is from: Life Guide to Digital Photography: Everything You Need to Shoot Like the Pros (Paperback)
I got this book with no expectations and i found it to be a good, informative read. If you're a beginner on a shoestring budget like me you'll find some good information that will increase your knowledge of photography. However it helps to remember he's writing as a photographer with every toy at his disposal, toys that can cost a lot of money. Don't think you can read this book and walk into a successful career in photography, you'll be disappointed. Even with that in mind, it is still worth the read.
McNally outlines what sort of things you should consider before taking your photos and then gives an example of it in his own work. If you are a more advanced photographer I'm sure you'll get something from it too, but unfortunately I'm not there just yet so i can't comment from that perspective.
It doesn't take you by the hand and tell you what to set your settings to, it treats you like an adult with a mind of your own and simply advises you.
The photos are great as you would expect from McNally and the silly American humour actually isn't too bad...i even laughed a few times myself.
Don't think it will revolutionise your skills over night, treat it like a book on a subject that you find interesting and you'll enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joe McNally - Digital Photography, 11 Sep 2011
This review is from: Life Guide to Digital Photography: Everything You Need to Shoot Like the Pros (Paperback)
Another excellent book written by Joe McNally. Each page has detailed information on how to make and take photographs like the professionals. Joe's intimate and often comical way of describing the mix of digital cameras, light, color and techniques make this book a must for every amateur and professional photographer.

I think I lost my objectivity long ago when it came to Joe McNally. His work is awe-inspiring with very little photoshop of any kind. To get it that right in camera and to do it consistently, is something all photographers should aspire to.

And so to this book. To seasoned professionals it'll be uber basic but an entertaining couple of hours read. To an amateur there's enough in the book to have you scratching your head for a minute or two. Take it one concept at a time, experiment, practice and enjoy, I did.

Can't imagine my bookshelf being without a copy but then again, I am biased and so should you be in my opinion.
