This review is from: Who Fears the Devil (Paperback)
Silver John The Balladeer travels the wilds of the southern states of America, on his journey to no particular destination, collecting as he goes, an arsenal of songs. Where he meets seemingly good people, who're preyed upon by the forces of darkness; from malicious restless spirits and nightmare creatures, to demons and followers of the left hand path, you name it and Silver John comes up against it. And although without conventional weapons, John does possess a good nature, a guitar with silver strings and a head full of folk songs, with which to do battle against fiendish evil...

This is a great book full of very imaginative supernatural stories. Wellman has quite an unorthodox style, in that although his stories are clever and controlled, he is also quite often flamboyant and poetic with his southern fried prose. Silver John is a very unique, heroic and humble character, that drifts through no particular time, helping those that need it, against devilish foes that deserve a righteous spanking from his musical hands..
Both heavily folkloric and moral, but without too heavy a sermon, the tales included in this omnibus of short stories are kind of weirdly reminiscent of Kung Fu (the 70s tv series), meets Robert E. Howard's horror stories, meets Mark Twain, meets Donovan..! And they come highly recommended.

Although written for adults(?), the stories have no need for sex, or gory violence, and can be read by any literate age.
Humorous, charming, mind bending, sinister. To the right reader this will be absolute magic.

Stories included here are:~

O Ugly Bird!.
One Other.
Shiver In The Pines.
Old Devlins Was A Waiting.
The Desrick On Yandro.
Vandy, Vandy.
Dumb Supper.
The Little Black Train.
Walk Like A Mountain.
On The Hills And Everywhere.
Nine Yards of Other Cloth.

With a further 11 single page vignettes.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Who Fears the Devil (Planet Stories (Paizo Publishing)) (Paperback)
I WOULD love it if I had it! Having read some of these charming stories of wandering magician-musician Silver John battling evil in rural USA with his silver-stringed guitar, I am keen to have this complete edition. Ordered on 20th July 2013 and two months later Amazon STILL don't have an estimated supply date from the publisher! When I ordered I was given an estimated date which came and went long ago. I really think they ought to stop advertising this title until they can be sure of supplying it within a reasonable time. Sure, I could cancel - but other suppliers are asking insane prices, presumable cos the book is hard to get!
