4.0 out of 5 stars Quality and well written
I found this book to be very informative and easy to read and enjoyed Simons style. All the relevant facts about the D300 are here in an easy to read and logical order. The book demystifies many parts of the manual but can be quite intensive in places. Having said that the D300 is not exactly a beginners camera!

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
This book by Simon Stafford is a disappointment. There is a great deal of useful material in it, but the prose style is only marginally more readable than the manual. The hints and tips really are useful, and most of what you could possibly want to know about the D300 is between the covers somewhere - but that can also be said of the manual.

This book by Simon Stafford is a disappointment. There is a great deal of useful material in it, but the prose style is only marginally more readable than the manual. The hints and tips really are useful, and most of what you could possibly want to know about the D300 is between the covers somewhere - but that can also be said of the manual.
The majority of the photo illustrations (as opposed to the photos of camera parts) bear no relationship whatever to the captions referring to them. And whose idea was it to use black and white images to illustrate so many points about the colour capabilities of the camera?
The book is plagued by niggling typos of the kind that evade the spell-checker but not the editor (or author) who cares about the final product - 'and' for 'an', 'you' for 'your', 'affect' for 'effect', 'taught' for 'taut' and so on.
Physically, the book is difficult to handle - it is unwilling to open to a comfortable extent, and you just know that if you push it it will fall apart.

I found this book to be very informative and easy to read and enjoyed Simons style. All the relevant facts about the D300 are here in an easy to read and logical order. The book demystifies many parts of the manual but can be quite intensive in places. Having said that the D300 is not exactly a beginners camera!

It matters not that the images are in mono because the author is not trying to demonstrate image quality or image style, he sticks to his remit of telling the reader what everything is and what everything does. On many occasions he imparts good advice on settings and I found his information of the D300s focus system very well explained and helpful. This book is the ideal take anywhere reference book due size and weight, and also includes smart wallet cards in the back.

Bear in mind the book was completed before the last firmware update so the very latest changes are not included but as they are minimal it does not matter that much.

Summary: No hesitation in reccomending this book. Well written, accurate and incredibly useful as a reference guide.

1.0 out of 5 stars My copy was shoddily bound, 31 Dec 2012
This review is from: Nikon D300 (Magic Lantern Guides) (Paperback)
A worthy book in terms of content but totally let down by the poor binding - I look after my books, but my copy fell to bits after little use.
