5.0 out of 5 stars the Art Of Drawing & painting Horses, 8 July 2012

This review is from: The Art of Drawing & Painting Horses: Capture the majesty of horses and ponies in pencil, oil, acrylic, watercolor & pastel (Collector's Series) (Paperback)
This book is inspirational & an excellent buy for anybody interested in horses & creating artwork connected to horses. There are instructions for different mediums & easy to follow guides to follow in order to have a go at creating your own piece of art. The book starts by showing you how to draw & progresses through the various stages of using watercolours, oils , acrylics & finally a wonderful section using Pastels to create images of horses in motion & then onto horse portraits. The book is comprised of work by different artists & so shows different techniques & styles. I would readily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys art.

I wanted a book that gave me more detail of anatomy. This gives you proportions, a drawing of the skeleton, and the parts of a horse, but nothing anatomical on muscle. There is a painting of a horse and the muscle groups pointed out, and we are instructed as artists to familiarise ourselves with the main groups...but it would help to have more detail, a stripped down detail of muscles and how they lie in relation to each other. It is all very well knowing how to shade and define things artistically, but, the muscle you are defining needs to be understood if you are going to be accurate.
It does give various styles and drawing and painting techniques, e.g. I found detail of the eye helpful. But I am still looking for a book on anatomy.

Helps you to understand and draw or paint horses. Sketching with pencils is fairly new to this 68yo who dabbles in watercolour painting and wanted to relearn a skill he used some 57 years ago as a schoolboy.

Bought this for my 14 niece who is a keen artist and it has progressed her art amazingly. She is now drawing incredibly life like horses. Wonderful book.
