This review is from: Talons (Paperback)
"Talons" is a sizzling anthology containing five erotic tales featuring shape shifting birds. Well familiar with and a great fan of the works of Michelle M Pillow, Mandy M Roth and Sydney Somers, I had high hopes for this book and found it as entertaining as I anticipated.

Kiss Me Deadly by Shannon Stacey

Khail is an Unkind, a shape shifting raven only able to assume human form in the home of his victims. A random bringer of death, with one kiss he ends the life of a loved one as punishment for a hideous crime he committed centuries ago. Entering the home of illustrator Bridget Sawyer, he is confused when she survives his kiss. Bridget in turn is determined to free Khail from his curse after they quickly fall in love. Yet with the Unkind trapping Bridget and Khail in her home, it appears it is only a matter of time before they drive Khail to madness and violence.

King of Prey by Mandy M Roth

In order to restore fertility to his land, shape shifting falcon King Kabril must take a mate. Unfortunately his destined mate is a foul human, an inferior being with no wings. Spending many months on Earth when informed he should at least attempt to woo his future bride, he grows to love bird photographer Rayna Vogel; however he is informed by his best friend Sachin that she is not his destined mate. Rayna too returns Kabril's feelings, yet kidnapped by his enemies, a clan of shape shifting Peregrines, she learns that not only has Kabril been lying to her throughout their time together, he's also marrying someone else.

Firebird by Jaycee Clark

Twenty years ago, whilst Cyzarine (Reen) was travelling to her betrothed, her shape shifting family were slaughtered. Despite mentally calling for her fiancé Rourke, he instead remained with his lover; his bond to Reen later severed by his disgusted father. Now twenty years later Reen is an expert in destruction; an elite assassin of the supernatural. Imprisoned by the Collector, a sadistic demon, Reen's powers weaken. It is not until she is forced to call for assistance that she soon realises her new partner Saker is really Rourke; now a man in love with the last surviving firebird and determined to do anything to prove he will never let her down again.

Caged Desire by Sydney Somers

Believed to be the harbinger of doom prophesised by his clan, Logan is locked in a cage and hidden away for fifty years. Found by Kyle, he has no idea who would be able to cope with such a massive and deadly looking eagle and so crates him up and posts him to his sister Eve, a several hundred year old vampire. Eve believes she's seen many things, but an eagle transforming into a beautiful naked man is a first; but can she trust him and release him from his imprisonment? Knowing his twin brother and accuser will be tracking him, Logan is desperate to escape; especially as he knows he endangers Eve's life with his presence; however he never anticipated falling in love with a feisty vampire.

Seize the Hunter by Michelle M Pillow

Princess Ari has decided to marry, and although she has several suitable men in mind for the role of her King, the ultimate decision lies with the sacred Chalice. One sip from this will transport her to the marital bed where she will awaken next to the future king. Shadowed in darkness, Ari has no idea of the identity of the man she wakens with; and although she correctly guesses he is not one of the men she assumed would be picked, her physical response to him is scorching. Unfortunately when her new husband's identity is revealed she is horrified; facing her childhood tormentor and now commander of her armies, falcon shifter Rurik.

I normally find that in an anthology featuring this many authors, there's always at last one story which doesn't measure up to the others. Well "Talons" five stories are all absolutely great and a real incentive to explore the full length novels of those authors I've encountered for the first time. This book is a red hot, page turning read, leaving romance lovers hoping that the feathered friends in our skies just may be something more than they first appear.
