4.0 out of 5 stars A good sturdy little overview
I have been working with the goddess Freyja for many years (more than I care to admit to these days!) and therefore bought this book immediately after discovering it existed. It is a nice sturdy little guide to the goddess and allows the reader to understand her within a pagan/ heathen context. 1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste of time & paper...
Do they just publish anything these days? This "book" is about 100 pages long and 40 of them are either blank, references, index and bibliography. So... let's judge the 60 pages that are the actual "book". It seems that the... ahem... author just read a bunch of books, took several information and put it together. Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Freyja, Lady, Vanadis: An Introduction to the Goddess (Paperback)
I have been working with the goddess Freyja for many years (more than I care to admit to these days!) and therefore bought this book immediately after discovering it existed. It is a nice sturdy little guide to the goddess and allows the reader to understand her within a pagan/ heathen context. It is clear that the author has done a lot of research in her field and she is careful to show where she found her information and to represent it clearly for the reader. Where this differs from purely academic texts however is that the author also brings in information on how Freyja is worshipped and understood by the modern pagan audience. I do feel that in her struggle to be taken seriously as an academical source, the author has lost a little of her own voice here and I would have liked to hear more information on how she personally views Freyja and how she works with her. I also feel that the gap between the US and UK styles is evident here, especially with the addition of the poetry, which I skipped over. However, if you are someone that likes to use poetry within invocations then I can see how it could be a very useful addition.

So... let's judge the 60 pages that are the actual "book". It seems that the... ahem... author just read a bunch of books, took several information and put it together. It's full of speculation and opinions (and really bad poems)and neither informative nor interesting. Furthermore the method of writing is very essay like (it turns out the author is an english student so I can see why) and the illustrations are the equivalent of those of my 5 year old cousin. I was almost angry I spent money on something that almost put me off any further reading on the goddess or the nothern tradition. I wish I could have given it a negative rating. You have been warned!
