5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one! Terrific., 1 July 2014

This review is from: The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Discovery Book: A Beginner's Guide to Building and Programming Robots (Paperback)
This is the one! I've read three other EV3 books to support my teaching of a Mindstorms after school club, and this one is the most clearly written, has the best diagrams and photos (in colour, essential for easy building), and is very carefully sequenced. The introductory material makes getting started easy and the more advanced building is tantalizing to my nine-year old avid builder, who started on a bipedal robot from the back of the book. Note that it is designed to be used with the Home Edition of EV3 rather than the Education Edition so some of the models would need to be modified or additional pieces purchased if you want to build the models using the latter type set. The programming material works, of course, on either type. Thank you, Laurens Valk.

This review is from: The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Discovery Book: A Beginner's Guide to Building and Programming Robots (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for the EV3 Home Set, both in terms of content and presentation. It is very clearly written and attention to detail is present throughout the book. The fact that it is in colour makes it so much easier to use. Even the cables are coloured on the diagrams to make the routing easier to see. The 6 robot designs are an added bonus to a really well written book. It can be used as a reference book or a study text by both children and adults. I was very impressed. It is clear that the author was thinking of the readers at every step when writing this book and he has left nothing unexplained or unclear in as far as it is possible to do that. A technical textbook of this size is always a bit intimidating but the use of colour, the attention to detail and the careful explanations should put all users at ease, especially children.

Two years ago I bought the NXT book by Valk and was very impressed with its clarity and depth. He assumes no knowledge of programming nor mechanics and gently but thoroughly leads you through a series of projects, exercises and challenges to teach a basic grounding from which you can design, build and programme your own robots.
When EV3 came out I was hoping for a book with a similar approach and I was not disappointed.
Very clear, very progressive and above all it encourages creativity rather than slavish following of instructions.
