2.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly disappointing effort from Ellis, 7 Dec. 2010
This review is from: Warren Ellis' Scars (New Printing) (Paperback)
I'm quite a big of Warren Ellis' work, and at his best he's one of the finest comic writers of this century so far, but this is a disappointing effort sadly. It begins well, introducing a Homicide detective who is recovering from a terrible tragedy of his own, and the case he has to investigate is a disturbingly intriguing one.

But the big problem with this graphic novel is the terribly rushed ending. The first four parts move at a realistic pace, but it's almost like Ellis got bored of the subject - or perhaps he (understandably) found it too harrowing to write about - and the final two issues feel slapdash and underwritten as if he just wanted it to be finished and done with. These are characters who should have been explored further, but the final two parts portray them as black and white cliches, and so there's no real point to reading this.

It's a real shame as it showed so much promise initally, but unless you can get this very cheaply, I really wouldn't recommend buying it.
