5.0 out of 5 stars Jeane Trend-Hill
An easy to read book illustrated throughout with wonderful photographs of tombs and monuments. The history behind the symbolism is fascinating. Keisters photographs are among some of the best cemetery photography I have seen. A wealth of knowledge for anyone interested in the architecture of eternity.

This review is from: Stories in Stone: A Field Guide to Cemetary Symbolism and Iconography (Hardcover)
This book is very orientated toward American cemetery architecture and so I'm left wondering just how applicable the interpretations are to the far more ancient, Pagan-influenced British and European graveyards. Many of the explanations of the details found on funerary carvings don't seem to be specific to their use in this context, thus the lotus flower's explanation is about the mythical significance of the lotus which may not be the same as when used on tombs and grave stones, others explanations are specific to funeral rites. The photographs in the book are far too small to show any detail and this is partly because of its 'pocket book' dimensions. There is much to learn from this book, but the delivery could've been better.
