3.0 out of 5 stars Galois Theory
This is a good book but it could have been much better. There are quite a few mistakes but most are not that confusing. The main problem is that a lot of the explanations are not as detailed as I would have liked (Maybe I'm just thick). 3.0 out of 5 stars Galois Theory, 1 Jun. 2010

This review is from: Galois Theory, Third Edition (Chapman Hall/CRC Mathematics Series) (Paperback)
This is a good book but it could have been much better. There are quite a few mistakes but most are not that confusing. The main problem is that a lot of the explanations are not as detailed as I would have liked (Maybe I'm just thick). This book is best for those who don't know much abstract algebra since most of the book deals with polynomials over the complex numbers rather than a general ring. This makes some of the proofs much messier than necessary. I recommend getting the Second Edition instead since it starts straight away with general rings and also has a few solutions in the back unlike the third edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE Errors!, 1 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Galois Theory, Third Edition (Chapman Hall/CRC Mathematics Series) (Paperback)
This is an excellent introduction to the main ideas of Galois Theory which is easy to follow and understand - BUT it is absolutely riddled with errors. These are usually broken references to chapters/equations/theorems which are obviously carried over from the smaller 2nd edition. As another reviewer says these are usually not too confusing, however in some places they can really make the arguments difficult to follow, and in a few instances render the proofs of various theorems incomprehensible!

I'd love to heartily recommend this book but sadly it seems to have been rushed out the door without careful checking and updating - all my lecturers say get the 2nd edition instead. Hopefully these problems will be sorted out in a future edition, at which point it will become a truly excellent text.

2.0 out of 5 stars A crap book., 1 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Galois Theory, Third Edition (Chapman Hall/CRC Mathematics Series) (Paperback)
You might have thought that by the third edition most of the mistakes would have been corrected, but every chapter seems to contain a few. The prose is annoying and contains a lot of waffle which is confusing. Also the book is cheaply bound and badly laid out. There are many good galois theory textbooks to be read so don't spend £40 on this.

Really useful for learning Galois Theory. The book is easy to follow and has a good explanation to theories leading up to understanding Galois Theory.
Would recommended this book to others.
