5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Work, 5 April 2013

This review is from: Albert Speer: Architecture 1932-1942 (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book which has now been faithfully reprinted in this beautiful new edition. The one star review of this book is laughable and nonsensical. This book contains many great images and maps which would otherwise be very hard to get hold of. It is a fascinating insight in to the cultural and architectural mindset of the reich which had honest intentions to last a thousand years, and who's rhetoric in architecture was deafening. It is hard for us to understand in this day and age, the huge building program which they began to undertake. Nothing has ever been seen like it since and I am doubtful if it ever will. Marvellous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Albert Speer: Architecture 1932 - 1942, 14 July 2013

This review is from: Albert Speer: Architecture 1932-1942 (Hardcover)
A fascinating and detailed guide to Speer's slimmed down classicism and more. The enormous projects were not realised, as Germany's efforts turned increasingly to war with all its horrors, rather than to creativity, development and improvement. Given the speed and rate of building, one cannot but be stunned at the achievement, much of it probably on the basis of horrific slave labour and grim work conditions for the foreign workers and prisoners forced to supply the raw materials and carry out the works. Both a tribute to a huge talent and its lack of humanity and honesty in the face of ambition and opportunism. To be read, I think, in conjunction with Gita Sereni's fascinating study of Speer's character and personality.

Excellent book and a great author.
He deserves far more recognition for his brilliance. Probably one of the most under-rated arhitects of all time.
