Alice in Cookieland
on 21 May 2012
I came across Alice Medrich's book on an American food blog and I'm still thankful. After having made two cookies from the blog I knew this was a "must have" book. Yes, as others already wrote, more pictures would have been great and the American measurements makes a set of measuring cup a bare necessity, but don't let yourself be put off by this. I feel like Alice in Cookieland, when exploring (there's no better word) this book. Every cookie I made till now has turned out exceptionally good, but very different from the usual cookies. My husband, who's not quite a cookie lover, did love them all so far. Most recipes have updates given for other versions. So I find myself experimenting with different flours, spices, nuts etc. with great results. There are also many suggestions for making gluten-free or wholemeal versions of cookies. My favorite recipe (until now) is "Cafe Olla sticks". This elegant cookie with it's complex but subtle aroma of spices is something you would expect with your espresso in a good restaurant.
Instructions are very clear and you'll learn amazing simple new techniques.
There's one warning to be given.
Once hooked to this book, you'll want to discover all cookies. So mind your weight and don't tell me I didn't warn you.
Now I'm off, back to Alice's Cookieland. See you there ;-)
