5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond what you'd hope for..., 13 Nov 2010
This review is from: Beyond Bop Drumming (Manhattan Music Publications) (Paperback)
The front cover namechecks Elvin Jones, Paul Motian, Ed Blackwell, Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette, and if you've any love or interest for these players' work (or drummers of a similar ilk) then you can't fail to marvel at this book & CD.

All John Riley's products are exemplary of their type, and for me this is the most inspiring and impressive of the lot, though each one is indispensable. I never imagined I could l-e-a-r-n how Elvin, etc, did THAT...

Buy it. Buy his others. You'll want to. The Art of Bop Drumming (Manhattan Music Publications) The Jazz Drummer's Workshop: Advanced Concepts for Musical Development: 1 The Master Drummer: How to Practice, Play and Think Like a Pro [DVD] [2009] [Region 0] [US Import] [NTSC]

...Incidentally, few of the other reviews I've seen of John Riley's stuff seem to mention his (non-playing, but notable) contribution to Steve Smith's "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" Drum Legacy DVD. You won't be disappointed with that either... Steve Smith - Drum Legacy Vol.2 [2006] [DVD]

Excellent stuff.
