5.0 out of 5 stars A solid read - not a biography, 23 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An insightful read that almost takes you back a hundred years to an era where Britain's influence hovered between the British Isles, India and Africa, while reaching beyond to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It was a world power - a manufacturing powerhouse with a huge geographical spread, held together by a navy that ruled all oceans and colonial administrators who, like Kitchener, we raised and lived for much of their careers, 'in the colonies' or protectorate. Reading this your perspective on the First World War puts you somewhere above the Mediteranean looking east to Egypt and the Arabs under Ottoman rule, north to the Dardanelles and north west to the most important front of them all between Flanders and the Somme.
