This review is from: How to be Funny: Discovering the Comic in You (Paperback)
Not living in the States, I didn't know who Steve Allen was, but I was recommended this book from friends. Not because I was not funny, I hope. :-)
I must say it makes an excellent read. After reading the first couple of chapters, I was funnier. Not because Allen tells you how you can be funny right away, but because it tells you that you can be funny about everything.
Then Allen goes on to tell you what kinds of comedy there are so that you can adapt everything to your style.
Throughout the book Allen shares a lot of jokes with you. Not to use as stock jokes though, but more to get you into the mood and into the thinking of comedy and how others appreciate it.
I would give this book 5 stars, but I didn't particularly enjoy the dialogue format which he uses throughout the book. As the subtitle says, the book is there to make you discover the comic you rather than tell you how to be funny.
