5.0 out of 5 stars Could be the teacher you've been waiting for.....
There aren't many books on magick that can lead a beginner sensibly from complete novice to the performance of the Star Ruby and the Star Sapphire, but this is one of them.

Farber has only one agenda : magick that works. And magick that makes sense to a modern 21st century student. In this slim volume you get practical advice on how to prepare yourself for...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fair but Fun
A fair look at some basic "magick" techniques. It's really a mix of Tim Leary psychology with post-Crowley meditation and thought techniques. While many of the ideas are valid for breaking the old patterns in your mind, none of it is new or really addresses any major ideas of dealing with technology issues. While it offers little new insight, it is...

A fair look at some basic "magick" techniques. It's really a mix of Tim Leary psychology with post-Crowley meditation and thought techniques. While many of the ideas are valid for breaking the old patterns in your mind, none of it is new or really addresses any major ideas of dealing with technology issues. While it offers little new insight, it is presented in a fun and informal way. Filled with personal experiences and fun stories, it is more accessible than the sources Faber draws from. Good for beginners just starting to explore these ideas, or for old hands who want some new ways to look at the old techniques.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Glass Instead of a Golden Cup!, 26 April 2008
This review is from: Future Ritual: Magick for the 21st Century (Paperback)
One the one hand Philip H Farber manages to avoid boring new age idiocy. On the other, however, one was left wondering: "what exactly is the point". Worth a read I would suggest but maybe not at this price. A pricey rehash?

There aren't many books on magick that can lead a beginner sensibly from complete novice to the performance of the Star Ruby and the Star Sapphire, but this is one of them.

Farber has only one agenda : magick that works. And magick that makes sense to a modern 21st century student. In this slim volume you get practical advice on how to prepare yourself for ritual, what to expect and why, what to discard and what to keep, and a series of excercises that, used properly, will prepare you for the more advance rituals laid out in the appendixes.

You won't be bogged down by supposedly ancient mumbo-jumbo, or the need to accept a particular magical philosophy or set of god forms. And, best of all, you won't have to pay anyone a large sum of money to "teach you".

You will need to work. In magic there are no free lunches. But every journey starts with the first step, they say, and buying this book could be yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a wide range of readers, 22 May 1999

This review is from: Future Ritual: Magick for the 21st Century (Paperback)
I opened FutureRitual expecting another rehash of basic magick pulled from all the same books I already own but I was surprised right from the first page. While Mr. Farber certainly covers the basics that a beginner would need to start a practice of magick, he describes it from such a unique, friendly, and entertaining viewpoint, that even someone with years of experience in magick will find something of worth. The goat story alone is worth the price.
