There have been times when slavery, patriarchy, racism, sexism, and other kinds of prejudices were considered "normal" and "natural" until groups of people became conscious of the immorality of such systems and ideologies (of course, these fights are far from over). Large groups of people are beginning to see the immorality of human prejudices against non-human animals, especially those animals that we eat (imagine how you would feel about billions of cats and dogs being factory farmed and slaughtered so that people can eat burgers and steaks--the disgust you feel is normal, and that should be your reaction to cows, pigs, and chickens being factory farmed and slaughtered for a bit of gustatory pleasure). This book is an important part of the ongoing moral expansion. Unlike other similar books, this one focuses on the psychological and societal underpinnings of meat eating--what the author calls "carnism." Once you become aware of carnism, you begin to see its manifestations everywhere. You're no longer neutral; you either support or oppose carnism.
