5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book on Black & White Portraiture
Karsh is, arguably, the finest portrait photographer of all time and a true gentleman.
I absolutely love this book, a great insight into his technique and a fascinating glimpse of his life story.
Highly recommended.

Having waited a number of months for this book to be published I was very disppointed. The reproduction of Mr Karsh's portraits is excellent, but the problem is not with the reproduction of the imagery or the fact that most if not all of them have been published previously when Mr Karsh was alive and these books are available secondhand. No, the issue I have is withthe the much trailed "extracts" from tape recordings with Mr Karsh which amount to no more than two or three sentences at most on the facing page, followed by several paragraphs of "interpretation" of Mr Karsh's words and the portrait concerned by Mr Travis (the author). Sorry, I don't want to hear from Mr Travis (I have nothing against him personally), but I wanted to read Mr Karsh's words not his. I was therefore greatly disappointed in this purchase. Maria Tippett's biography of Mr Karsh (Portrait in Light and Shadow: The Life of Yousuf Karsh)published several years ago in my opinion gave more insight into Mr Karsh.

4.0 out of 5 stars through the mind and eyes of Karsh, 7 Sep 2013

Generally photographers professionals and amateurs alike study the images by one of the greatest photographers on technical Merritt. How wonderful to learn the story behind the picture by the artists himself. A portrait is blank without expression and having at least some understanding to the nature of the sitter. This book gives us both through the mind and eyes of the world leading portrait photographer.

I am very pleased with this book - it is a super introduction to Mr Karsh's work and has very reasonable re-production for the price. The text is also very rewarding reading, hearing nuggets of information about the sitters and the sessions.
