5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent work-along instruction for beginner to intermediat

1.0 out of 5 stars The attached CD does not work.
The person from Florida who bought this book and submitted his review in February also had the same problem. There is simply no way to read this CD. This means that you can not access the files for all of the tutorials in the book, and without the tutorial, it simply becomes another reference book rather than a "learning experience".

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent work-along instruction for beginner to intermediat, 25 Aug 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside ADOBE Photoshop 4.0 (Paperback)
This book covers everything you need, not only to get started, but to keep going. The excercises are well-presented and refer to files available on the CD-ROM.
The authors' style is witty without going overboard (like the "Dummies" series). The arrangement of the lessons provides an interesting departure from the predictable. Also the writers present working studio methods as well as basic techniques.
The section which most characterizes the consideration the authors show for their readers is the depth coverage of the "preferences" menu items to personalize Photoshop. This occurs early but not before we have had a chance to play with the tools a bit.
I have found this quite a useful book for learning Photoshop.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for THE book on Photoshop 4 , its this one, 22 Nov 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside ADOBE Photoshop 4.0 (Paperback)
I have been disappointed in 3rd party books in the past as they have been either to technical or just a rehash of the softwares manuals. Not with this book. Once you start using this execellent resource you will find that the author is not only passionate about photoshop but also passionate about delivering the sorts of techniques most of us want to know.Best suited for beginners and intermediates, the example tutorials are excellent in their ease of instruction and are easily adaptable to any creative experimentation. You won't regret buying this book and it certainly won't be collecting dust on the bookshelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Look at the Adobe book too, 30 Dec 1997
By A Customer
I purchased this book over Adobe's own info book in part due to reviews I read here on the Amazon website. I would like to add some pertinent comments to other reviews: For a software program that is primarily used on the Power Macintosh operating system, the presentation of Windows95 oriented commands followed by mac commands in () is very annoying. In fact more than annoying, I would recommend the purchase of the Adobe/mac info book for all Mac users.!!!! Many of the examples off the CDs are run using mostly shortcuts (a very windoz method). Not all of them are related back to the menu in detail and some I didn't find at all. Another annoying thing is that the entire list of shortcuts for the program isn't included, one is directed back to Adobe's own documentation (see pg22). Some advanced methods in the book actually apply to files started with other programs ex: POSER, although the example files are on the CD. Animation and Website construction are covered in detail. I found the chapters on scanning and image resolution helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks Real "Solid", 20 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside ADOBE Photoshop 4.0 (Paperback)
First,a comment about the first reviewer on the list, the viewer from New york who rated it "Horrible". Look sharply Sir, you have rated the wrong book. This book is not the PhotoShop 4 "WOW" book! I did not purchase the book but I did look it over thouroughly and I found it to be well organized, consise and complete especially for entry level. The only reason I diden't buy it is because I have six other books on Photoshop4 and I have just upgraded to Photoshop version 5.0. As far as the CD is concerned,I didn't have the option to try the tutorial CD. But I have had trouble with tutorial CD's in the recent past because some CD tutorials work in conjunction with specific Browsers (offline)in order to bring up the tutorials. I could not get my "Photoshop5 Certification Guide" CD to operate propery until I upgraded my browser to IE 5.0. Try E-mailing the publisher, I found that they can somtimes resolve the problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book that covers many aspects of using Photosho, 18 Feb 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside ADOBE Photoshop 4.0 (Paperback)
This is an outstanding book which introduces the Photoshop user to most of the essential concepts through a series of tutorials based on images on the included CD-ROM. And although it is suitable for the novice, it provides much more than an introduction. One example of this is that it shows you multiple ways of accomplishing something at various points throughout the book. I was continually impressed by Photoshop's depth as I discovered layer after layer (pun intended!) of features. Another important point is that these tutorials illustrate real-world techniques and projects that end with a result that you might have been proud of if you had done it all on your own. I would also point out that the tutorials were accurate and correct, unlike some I have used for other products. In other words, the text agreed with what Photoshop's menus, etc. were doing and it agreed with the contents of their CD-ROM.

5.0 out of 5 stars An information superstore for design techniques., 29 Oct 1997
By A Customer
This is a powerful and challenging book. This is an excellent book for both beginning and advanced users of Adobe's Photoshop 4.0. Although the publishers stated user level is accomplished to advanced, I believe that even novice users will find this book as useful as advanced users. The book assumes a basic understanding of Photoshop, and quickly progresses into advanced techniques, tips, final effects and editing methods. Another benefit and bonus to this book are the two accompanying CD's. These have some of the best supporting material that is expertly incorporated into the book as examples, as well as providing stock images and textures to manipulate and experiment with. A drawback to this book is that at times it can be verbose, however, the authors do a very good job of reducing complex processes into simplified ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars the most useful photoshop book on my bookshelf!, 29 Dec 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside ADOBE Photoshop 4.0 (Paperback)
i bought all three books of the "inside 3d max" series a while ago and was pleased with the in-depth coverage. i thought i couldn't go wrong with "inside photoshop 4". i was right. i thought i know a lot of photoshop as i use it in my day to day work. the graphics used for the exercises in this book are partially eye insulting ugly. but the technical content is unbeatable. the exercises forced me to continuously use keyboard shortcuts i never heard of before. yes, i have to admit to having used only 50% of the new power photoshop 4 offers. i never used the clever alt+shift+f and ctrl+shift+f commands. i never used the new layer modes before. this book is a big time-saver and will extent my lunch break substantially :-) ps: could we get a german edition of the entire "inside" book line?

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can imagine it...this book will help you create it!, 3 Oct 1997
By A Customer
I have spent $300+ on Photoshop 4 text books and wish I had seen this book first. With the aid of the 2 CD's, every example in the book is part of the tutorials on the disks and step-by-step instructions follow you to fruition of your creations. The humor, like suggesting you put down that soda or sandwich to navigate the keyboard better, helps put you at ease with this powerful and sometimes complicated digital imaging program. With each tutorial, the short cuts, tips and detailed explanations of "why and how", you will learn how the masters do it. With classroom textbooks, you at least can take you instructor home and keep asking questions till you find the solution. Trust me, this book should be opened on your desk and one of the CD's accessed for your first lesson!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of a truly complex package, 30 Oct 1997
By A Customer
With mere days left until I planned to start working in a professional graphics shop, I began reading this book cover-to-cover. Within a week, having worked through the examples, I felt confident that I could perform any task necessary within the Photoshop environment. The examples are practical and cover a wide range of topics from image retouching to web graphics design and optimization. The novice user shies away from layers and masks. This book tackles them directly and immediately, giving you familiarity with the basic---and most powerful---tools in Photoshop from the very beginning. Flexible enough to be an effective tutorial and a comprehensive reference, this is the book to get if you want to get all you can out of Photoshop 4.0.

I think two people with the same problem out of 5 or 6 reviews is a poor percentage of success.
