This book is certainly a bit on the pricey side, but if you're serious about learning Tibetan, it's worth every penny. It's a pretty big book for a start - over 550 pages. It's well laid-out and constructed and comes with two CDs. I've just started working my way through it, but it's a very-well written and user-friendly introduction to this difficult language. Highly recomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars State of the art, 21 July 2009
This review is from: Manual of Standard Tibetan: Language & Civilization (Paperback)
This is for the moment the best course around for learning Tibetan. There isn't anything else that comes close. No problem at all with terminology. The only blemish is that some texts were recorded by someone sitting next to a large drum, thus making the speech difficult to hear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manual of Standard Tibetan: Language & Civilization Nicolas Tournadre, 11 Jan 2013
This review is from: Manual of Standard Tibetan: Language & Civilization (Paperback)
Clear and well written, with nice and useful comments on tibetan culture and civilization, I highly recomend this manual to whom ever is seriously meaning to learn Tibetan. The 2 CDs that come with thw book are also a great feature to help the learners mastering the pronunciatiation of the language. One of my mothertongues is French, but I ordered the English edition and there are no problems at all concerning terminology or grammatical explanations. A great course alltogether!

4.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, 8 Oct 2007

Its is a big book and worth having BUT the grammatical terms used (translated from French in to English) make the explanations very difficult to understand. Even if you are beginning to learn Tibetan you will find the Tibetan text much easier and clearer than any of the accompanying English.
