5.0 out of 5 stars informative reference, 30 Sept. 2012

This review is from: Tea: History, Terroirs, Varieties (Paperback)
This is a good all-round reference on tea, with additional attributes that elevate it to essential status.

Uniquely for books in English, this book covers history and the main tea growing regions up to date and in some detail. There is fairly detailed information about the current state of the tea industry in China, Taiwan, and Japan, and recently developed tea varieties like Anji Bai Cha are discussed. The section on the biochemistry of tea is also highly recommended. The section presenting a scientific analysis of caffeine content of different kinds of tea is especially notable and this information is hard to find elsewhere.

I like to read this book in conjunction with The Tea Drinker's Handbook for that book's rigorous tasting notes and somewhat different selection of tea types.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful book and a good place to start, 10 Sept. 2012

This review is from: Tea: History, Terroirs, Varieties (Paperback)
I don't drink coffee with any enthusiasm, but do enjoy tea, but often only a favourite Ceylon and some first and second flush darjeelings. I spent a couple of days reading this through, which increased my knowledge very substantially, yet my experience was enhanced by the organisation, which interspersed factual matter with full-page colour photographs. I am usually sniffy about full colour illustrations, but in the case of this book they added more information about the places, people and teas referred to by the authors, and were apposite. I learnt very quickly everything from the origin of the Opium Wars, to the best methods of brewing oolong tea. With this knowledge, I armed myself with some Dong Ding Oolong, and still practising the gong fu method, am now sipping a most fragrant and beautiful tea. My only warning is not to drink too much later in the evening, otherwise if you are like me, you might find it difficult getting to sleep! For anyone wishing to make a hobby out of a basic necessity, and create some time for personal space and calm after a day's work, this book could well get you started. It would also make an excellent choice for couples looking for hobbies to share. As I write, the bouquet of the dong ding still fills my mouth!

5.0 out of 5 stars It is not a book about muffins, it is about tea!, 3 April 2014

So good. It doesn't talk about cakes and muffins (thanks God). It talks about the tea's history, the varieties of the tea, how it can be prepared. Highly recommended.
