4.0 out of 5 stars Precious Remedies against Satan's devices, 11 Jun 2011
By

This book was written in 1652 but the English is still clear and understandable.

It gives a thorough breakdown of how Satan seeks to disturb and destroy through his devices. To every device Brooks gives the appropriate remedy.

C.H. Spurgeon said of Thomas Brooks that he "scatters stars with both his hands". On every page there are many excellent and noteworthy comments. Brooks was a learned man, he understood Latin and Greek. In addition, he had a deep knowledge of Greek and Roman history and culture.

Brooks compares Satan to a pirate, and says "a pirate will most hotly pursue those galleons which have the most precious cargoes." Those Christians who are striving to serve God and grow are the ones who Satan will target.

At times Christians may endure terrible persecution and hardship. Brooks uses the example of Herodotus who said of the Assyrians "let them drink wormwood all their life long, when they die they shall swim in honey".

This book is not only to be read once but is invaluable as a reference tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars A timeless sword, 9 Sep 2011

Christians are instructed to use the Word as a Sword. Clearly and systematically, this book shows you how. It brings to light the spiritual struggles that so many Christians experience without being aware of what is happening. For example, this book shows some of the ways Satan keeps Christians in a 'sad, doubting, questioning, and uncomfortable condition' informing us that one way is that they are induced to 'mind their own sin more than their Saviour' then Scriptures such as Romans 8.1 are quoted to counteract that particular temptation. The 21st Century reader will find that they face the same struggles as their 17th Century counterpart and that the same remedies still work.

This book is of inestimable value and can only benefit its readers. For a long time, it disappeared from bookshops (my paper copy is more than 30 years old) so I'm delighted to see it available to a new generation of Christians in a new format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 14 Feb 2014

For every new book you read, read at least two old ones. Otherwise you will be lost in the blind spots of the culture of your time.chronological snobbery being one of them. This is beautifully written and has all the wonderful rhetorical device and coinage of phrase that belonged to the 17th century. This book shocked and delighted me.Things I had just vaguely started to perceive in my life as temptations and snares were brought to light and the theological clarity of his argument is always matched by his emotional passion for Jesus. Very practical advice and help.Be transformed by he renewal of your mind as the apostle Paul said. This is one of those books. For the person who has just started to follow Jesus, or the seasoned disciple this book is very helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its a Gem, 16 May 2013
As you will know this was the book given to William Grimshaw in the great 18th century revival. It changed his life and God used him to turn Haworth in England upside down, from darkness to light, from hell to heaven. Its a precious book to the soul, the only reason i brought it after reading Grimshaws life by Faith Cook (Banner of Truth) i highly recommend that too ; )
