5.0 out of 5 stars Good read, 28 Mar 2014

The book was a good read. The protagonist was appealing, his reactions and solutions to the problems he had to live with were novel and romantic in an Indiana Jones kind of way, with his ruined fortress hide-out and his gung ho approach to people who encroached on his space. The mystic element was a bit weird, but not over sentimentalised, so I didn't mind it .

Good fun adventure action read that was interesting and fun had good and bad in it but for most it's a nice little read and decant humor in places too.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth the slow start, 15 Dec 2013

When I started reading this, I became rather irritated by how much 'telling' there was, and how little action, or 'showing'.

However, as soon as I adjusted to the pace of the book I realised that there was a lot going on underneath the almost monotone style. There is humour, some hidden, some acute observations from a single male mindset. There's interesting insight, problem solving, great tactics, interesting people...

I still think we are told too much, and the hero gets too much information by some sort of problem solving divine revelation, but I did enjoy the book and will look for more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Damn good, 18 Nov 2013

This book is really rather good. The only reason that it does not get 5 stars is because only one character is ever more than one dimensional. The story line is believable (or at least consistent with its self) and Dorn is well done. It's is worth a read.
