Nowhere in the product description of this translation are we told that this is an ABRIDGED version! It's so severely abridged you might call it a precis. What a disappointment: all the wonderful colour and detail of Maupassant's novel are missing, leaving a bland, featureless shadow of the original. Anyone who had never read the novel in French would be wondering why Maupassant is so highly regarded as a writer. Of course, this crippled version only costs £0.77 but for me it was £0.77 ill-spent. My advice is to splash out £7.99 for a proper translation.
