5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Step by Step Guide for Beginners
The first things that struck me about this book is the care and detail that went into the presentation, packaging and language. The writing is clear and concise, the advice is practical and tailored perfectly to the amateur or those just wanting to have a go at recreating some of the most famous paintings in the world.

I suspect that if you are an experienced...

1.0 out of 5 stars A truly dreadful book
Despite its subtitle "10 Step by Step Guides from Old Masters", there is absolutely nothing of value, either textually or visually, in this book relating to how the Old Masters created their paintings.
The only thing I learned from this book was to check the 'search inside this book' button before buying.

I suspect that if you are an experienced graphic artist, that some of this will be old news to you - but for someone just starting out, you really can't do better. Considering the bargain price of this book, you're certainly getting great value and the quality of the work stands out.

Anyone with an interest in giving oil painting a go should definitely check this out - it's the perfect starting point, I couldn't recommend it any higher!

Despite its subtitle "10 Step by Step Guides from Old Masters", there is absolutely nothing of value, either textually or visually, in this book relating to how the Old Masters created their paintings.
The only thing I learned from this book was to check the 'search inside this book' button before buying.
I'm a qualified graphic artist, and I've recently been drawn to oil painting and classic realism. As I'm working on Vermeer's 'Girl with Pearl Earring' and have finished the grisaille stage, I was hoping for technical advice on Vermeer's glazing technique. As the book purports to show this particular painting 'Step by Step', I bought it, along with several other art books on classical realism.
What a waste of money. There is no detailed examination of how this work (or any other work)was created. The 'Step by Step' process is the author's own amateurish attempts to reproduce the works of the old masters. The results are those of a talented secondary school student, or an average first year art student. Some - the Velazquez & the Rossetti, for example - are so cringeworthy that the original artists must be spinning in their graves. I leafed through it in growing disbelief, thinking it must be some kind of joke. But the joke was on me, for parting with my money.
This book is a very amateurish attempt at a complex subject and is of absolutely no use to any artist seriously interested in reproducing and learning from the masterpieces of times past. Avoid it at all costs.
