There is nothing to add to my review of the first Callaways series," On a Night like this". Again "So this is love" was an excellent read. The characters are true to life and very believable. Once again I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

A female arson investigator and a homicide detective negotiate their mutual attraction as they struggle to catch a firebug whose motives are deeply personal.

Emma Callaway is a woman in a man's job. This is made even harder by the fact that her family is so entwined with the San Francisco Fire Department. Emma has to work three times as hard as her colleagues. She doesn't have time for distractions...and that's what homicide cop Max Harrison represents. Max has problems of his own. He's burdened by his older brother's long prison sentence and the accusation that he didn't do enough to help his brother's case. Now his brother is getting out, leaving Max anxious about what will happen next.

Freethy does a good job with the push-pull of the couple's relationship. Emma's a little hard edged for my taste, but she has to be. Still, I wish the author gave her a little more softness and vulnerability.

The evolution of the Harrison brothers' relationship provides a nice subplot. The main arson case is also intricate and well plotted, though the suspects and motives get a little convoluted toward the middle. The resolution, though, is taut with drama and worth wading through some muddy investigative waters.

We also get to see more of the whole Callaway clan, and there are interesting plot threads concerning Emma's grandmother, whose progressing dementia threatens to reveal something her husband is determined to keep quiet. Also, Emma's sister Nicole has an autistic son and a marriage on the rocks. It'll be fun to see where all of this goes.

So This Is Love (Callaways #2) by Barbara Freethy

3.5 Stars

The Callaway saga continues with Emma, a fire investigator who is trying to solve the string of arson attacks around the city. Also investigating is Max Harrison, a homicide detective who has recently returned to the area after years of living away. It soon becomes evident that Emma is the connection between the blazes and the race is on to see why the things that mean most to her are being targeted before someone else dies.

Max and Emma have a kind of love/hate relationship, both are attracted to the other but neither wants to be. Emma has just come out of a long term relationship and has decided she wants to be alone for a while, and Max really doesn’t feel he can offer anything permanent to a woman. The more they work together the closer they become and once the sparks really begin to fly between them there is no way to put out the fire.

These arson attacks were the back-story in book one and I’m glad it was concluded in this installment and didn’t drag out throughout the series. We now have a new little subplot going on…. The Callaway secret that Grandma keeps mentioning so I am looking forward to finding out more about that in the coming books.

This series is perfect for romance lovers who enjoy suspense and intrigue in their stories.

I bought the whole series after reading the first book for free! This book is about Emma and Max and how their relationship develops, Max has history and wants to stay away from relationships, the men in his family are a disaster in this area, so he doesn't want to end up like them! Emma is not long out of a bad relationship, so she's not keen either, but they find it hard to avoid! Emma is a fire investigator who finds herself in danger and Max is a homicide detective also working on the same investigation after a body was found in a fire. You start to hear about the fires and the nun going missing in the first book, so I couldn't wait to read the second to find out what happened and who dunnit!

Another excellent book by Barbara Freethy. 2nd in the Callaways saga. Very descriptive which makes you feel like you are one of the characters. Good twist in the story which keeps you wondering 'who did it' right to the end.
