This is the best Russian reader I have used. The stories are quite amusing and engaging, just the right length for me and the vocabulary is reinforced story by story. There is a vocab list for each story, a dictionary at the back and you can listen to the vocab and stories on the internet.
On the negative side, some of the vocab seems unusual, by which I mean where there are two options for a word they sometimes use the option which seems to me (in my ignorance) to be the less widely-used one.

This is an excellent, well laid out reader at the elementary level. Its more-or-less college days and work stories are a welcome relief from what seems presently to be the main, and deficient choice in bi-lingual learner's books, that is, between fairy tales, worthy Pushkinism and Voice of America news. I bought volume 1 prior to this and wanted more of the same, but there comes a time when we want to move on. I would like to move on to news, that is, to the kind of words commonly used on TASS Novosti, but preferably to avoid the mental straight-jacket of VoA.
