5.0 out of 5 stars Podium - Brilliant Picture of the Private Journey to Public Sporting Success, 31 Aug. 2014

This review is from: Podium: Sporting Champions' Paths to the Top (Paperback)
Drawing on his own research and the biographies of numerous respected athletes, Ben Oakley has produced a treasure chest full of insight into what makes a sporting champion.

He addresses whether athletes think differently about pain, anxiety and challenge.

He provides subtle texture for the nature versus nurture debate and introduces the idea that learning motivation and “a genetic responsiveness to training” are key ingredients in the rocket fuel needed for ultimate success.

The book is particularly insightful about the psychology of failure, loss of form, post success retirement, the isolation induced by injury and the surprisingly frequent incidence of depression that seems to go with the territory.

Above all Ben Oakley captures the essential truth that great success starts in the privacy of an athletes' mind, if they are lucky with an insightful coach in attendance but “away from witnesses and behind the lines“, as Mohammad Ali famously said; a very private journey.

Podium is a cracking, informative, well argued and well researched book for anyone with a serious interest in what shapes a sporting champion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compulsive for any sports fan, 18 Sept. 2014
Podium is compulsive reading for any sports fan, or for anyone fascinated by how individuals can rise to the top of their field. The book's real strength is its breadth of subject matter, exploring physiological, psychological and sociological components in the success of serial champions. Oakley displays a talent for distilling complex ideas into memorable nuggets of wisdom, with applications well away from the sports field. At its best, Podium feels like an Odyssey into the largely hidden world of the sporting champion, and Oakley's original analysis of multiple sports people's autobiographies provides a wider, more illuminated canvas than we could get from reading about any single sportsperson. If you liked Bounce by Matthew Syed, definitely give Podium a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone with aspirations for themselves or their children to succeed., 10 Aug. 2014

This review is from: Podium: Sporting Champions' Paths to the Top (Paperback)
What I love about this book is its relevance to life outside sport. Anyone with aspirations for themselves or their children to succeed, would find gems of real practical value, from nurturing talent in early life, to dealing with perfectionism, pressure, injury and other setbacks later on.
A lot of research has gone into the making of the book. It is well written, and the issues explored are made interesting and easy to understand. The examples taken from lives of sportsmen and women are fascinating, and make you see them as the ordinary people that they are, facing the same problems as the rest of us.
A real find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Having read the first few pages, 19 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Podium: Sporting Champions' Paths to the Top (Paperback)
This is just the sort of book I like, waiting for the full length version to arrive so I can give a full report. Why I enjoy this style of writing is because it is not over complicated and says it as it is, giving the story with a real background and relevance is what it's all about.
