If anybody is qualified to write about Manchester United it must be David Meek. He started to report on them for the Manchester Evening News following the Munich Air Disaster and covered over 2000 of their games before retiring in 1995. In that time he became part of the fabric of the club, and was trusted by both players and management alike. Although no longer a full time reporter he still writes about United and in this, his latest book, he has written about that trio of immortals, George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. The book also serves as an overview of Manchester United, primarily in the four decades following Munich.

As you would expect, Meek has produced an excellent book full of insight from a man who knows Manchester United inside out. The only problem is that the Manchester United team from that period must be the most written about football team in history. Not only that, but one of three main `characters', George Best, must also be one of the most written about footballers ever, and a second, Bobby Charlton, wouldn't be too far behind. This means that this book doesn't really offer anything new to people like me who are avid readers of books focussing on footballs golden age - the sixties and seventies.

Whilst I didn't learn anything new this doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy the book though. I'm not a Manchester United fan but I loved the Manchester United team that won the European Cup; the final was the first football match I ever watched so I have them to thank for my love affair with football since that night. This book allowed me to wallow once again in the time when football really was the greatest game and Best, Charlton and Law were three of its greatest ever exponents.
