5.0 out of 5 stars Superb fun and an easy read
I too read this as a teenager, and it introduced me to strong coffee and cigars, as Dax, the central character likes.

The story begins I believe in the 1930's, in a fictional South American country, where Dax is a small boy. There is a revolution, one of many to come, and Dax is sent to a public school in Britain, with his bodyguard, Fat Cat.

Incredibly prompt delivery, much quiicker than quoted. Well pleased with that. Disappointed to discover this was a censored version of the original story. Some of the cuts were so poor they created blanks in the text.

He is already old beyond his years and on his first day breaks the ribs of a boy he is forced to fight. They become life long friends.
He grows up, mixes with the rich and famous, then know as 'The beautiful people', now simply called celebrities. He tries to fight in the Korean war, but is foiled. He tries to do some good, but ...
It is a very long story. A sort of trashy, 'War and Peace' but easily read and good fun. I remember it with fondness.

5.0 out of 5 stars the adventures of Dax and Fat Cat make a for a great read, 29 April 2005
I read this great tale - the adventures of Dax and his pal Fat Cat - ages ago when I was a young teenager and thought it was a great book then. In clearing out my house, i came across it again and have just re-read it - and it was just as good and just as powerful. If you are are looking for a great tale - check it out!
