5.0 out of 5 stars Brill! The ending we've all been waiting for!, 1 April 2012

Well - what a great series Vanguard has been. And how thrilling that David Mack brings the whole thing to a close with this rousing finale. Written with care and elegance, as always, I found I couldn't put the book down until I'd finished. How lucky we are to have a series that has a proper beginning (Star Trek Vanguard: Harbinger), a middle (all the other Vanguard books) and here, a proper end with Storming Heaven.

Much like Star Trek 6, the book is delicately peppered with allusions to 'endings' and how we all have to move on, one way or another. All the characters we know and love get 'a moment' which I really appreciated, and by the ACTUAL end things are moving so fast you can hardly keep your breath. As always, the original characters created just for Vanguard blend seamlessly with some pre-established 'screen' Trek characters and occasional 'trek fic' characters into a wonderful whole that it's difficult to say goodbye to, but alas, we must.

Obviously, you might not enjoy this as much if you havent read the other books in the saga so do that first (and have great fun doing so!) then come here for the heartstopping finale. I promise, you wont be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't want it to end, but it had to, and this was the best way., 24 Oct. 2012

This review is from: Storming Heaven (Star Trek: Vanguard) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Vanguard series has impressed me mightily, the characters that have been created have enriched the Star Trek franchise, the stories told throughout the saga have been imaginative in an era of history that is supposedly "written", and it retroactively lays groundwork for parts of the Star Trek franchise both large and small that will have you smirking and muttering "That's actually really cool..." . This is as fitting a conclusion as I could imagine.

Without going into plot spoilers or anything like that, I can only describe the pace as "just right", at no point does it feel contrived, but it still wraps the whole shindig up perfectly. I'd even go as far as to say that there's a sense of symmetry. It pulls no punches, and isn't afraid for people to clock out in a manner other than they deserve. It's quite action packed, but it doesn't lose sight of what Star Trek's all about either. All in all, it's a thrilling conclusion to what's probably one of the best Star Trek book series to have happened since the DS9 relaunch.

If you've read as far as this, there's no point turning back now anyhow, but you really won't be disappointed.

Not a bad plot. It always amazes me how David Mack can make the impossible plausible and highly colurful. Not quite sure how it fits in the timeline but that is my ignorance of the genre. Some of the writing involves very long, convoluted sentences - too long to understand sometimes and hence only 4 stars.

a brilliant series of books. very nicely interwoven with events from the tv series, and if you read the 9th book which does seem like a recap, it sets up a future return for the Shedai, probably for the 'next gen' era of books. I look forward to that.
