1.0 out of 5 stars A too-brief look at some Gradle features, this book fails to act as a good reference or a good learning aid., 23 July 2014

This review is from: Gradle Beyond the Basics (Paperback)
I was hoping for great things from this book having grasped the basics of Gradle. Unfortunately it is very very thin at just 69 pages and despite being called "Gradle Beyond the Basics" it is in fact "Gradle Only Just Beyond The Basics, Briefly". It covers working with files (copying, filtering and manipulating files and collections of files), has a few pages on plugins (this could have been so much bigger), talks about build hooks and then spends the final third of the book talking about dependency management.

To compound its brevity many of the examples in the book are fragments of a build file with no surrounding context, making it harder to understand the application of the features being discussed in the wider scope of a gradle build.

The author could have made this book so much more useful just by starting with a basic project and then introducing each of the features he discusses. Step by step he could have expanded the initial gradle build with real working examples for the reader to experiment with.

Unfortunately this book falls firmly between two stools. The features it discusses aren't covered in enough detail to regard it as a solid reference, and the material that is provided is too minimal to be a good lear-by-example book.

What we have here is another phamphlet sold for the price of a book. Don't waste your money. 66 pages.

The authors other Gradle book (Building and Testing with Gradle) is 89 pages, also a ripoff.
