4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but some flaws...
I loved the beginning of this book with the descriptions of Philomena in the convent with her new baby, Anthony. It was so Irish, it was moving and it was heartbreaking. From the moment Anthony left, I longed for them to be reunited.

Having finished the book, I find the description a little deceiving. Philomena isn't the tale of the search of a mother for...

3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading!
If you think you are going to read Philomena's story - You are wrong. This is Michael Hess ( Antony) story. It centres on his journey through life feeling rejected and alone. He embarks on a career in Law which takes him to the Whitehouse, rubbing shoulders with the President, and partying in Gay Bars, progressing to a life that includes a sordid and depraved side, often...

A truly infectious read that can't be put down for long. An encapsulating true story of such sorrow and illustrated with tenderness and adoration for both son and mother.
Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, 7 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was hoping for more of a story around them trying to find each other but found the story centred around the son's life in too much detail - especially when it came to his sex life where I would have been more than happy not to know so much about his love of bondage and whipping. Not enough story from Philomena's perspective

5.0 out of 5 stars A very moving story, 6 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book after seeing the movie, which at times made me feel sad and also as a Christian, very angry at the way the church had treated Philomena and her son. The book and the film are quite different. The book focuses on Anthony/Michael and his life in America and his search for his mother. The movie focuses more on Philomena and her search for her son. I really enjoyed the book. It is a deeply moving story.
