5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!
A beautiful and nostalgic book, and a great memorial to all that was lost following the Beeching massacre. It evokes wonderful memories of the best days of British rail, and the author has included every railway line that was closed as a result of the Beeching report, (and the second Beeching report!).
The maps are particularly useful as they were in fact, the maps...

3.0 out of 5 stars formulaic
There is value in this record of the lines that were lost in the 1960s and 1970s. But the subtitle talks of 'memories' and that is not the word that comes to mind as you plough through this formulaic account of the different branch lines and minor through routes that were taken out of service. Occasionally the author ventures an adjective such as 'delightful' (of a...

Though this tends to be just a run through of all the closures, with some that had already done so by the time of the report, it still is a good summary of railways in the 1960's.

Could have done with a secion on how the trackbeds have fared since.

Worth having.

The book is very interesting but where I lived in Saddleworth Oldham no closers were mentioned. One of the lines was Oldham to Delph in Saddleworth,Oldham to Greenfield in Saddleworth ,Royton to Manchester and Oldham to Middleton which had the steepest incline in the country. It seems like the author had never heard of Oldham.

I love trains, the look of them, the smell of them, I have a similar relationship with tractors and airplanes. This comprehensive book about the demise of our great transport system has it all. Documented history, great photos, nostalgia and a real celebration of the railways and trains lost plus some recoveries when common sense prevailed. Thank you Julian.
